Getafe president Angel Torres believes Manchester United will look to sell Mason Greenwood this summer while he has already spoken to suitors Barcelona about the forward.

The 22-year-old has not played for the Red Devils since January 2022 after being arrested for attempted rape, controlling behaviour and assault.

All charges were dropped at the start of last year and, following an internal investigation, United were on the verge of reintegrating him into the squad before being forced into a rethink following a backlash when the news leaked.

He moved to Getafe on loan on deadline day of the summer window and has started to revive his career, scoring eight times and laying on six assists in 29 La Liga appearances.

Greenwood’s performances have alerted the attention of a number of clubs, with Atletico Madrid and Barca both linked with moves, while Italian giants Juventus are also thought to be interested.

There had also been suggestions that he could return to Old Trafford, with Sir Jim Ratcliffe saying new minority owners Ineos would make a fresh decision on the winger’s future.

But now it appears United are pushing ahead with a sale, with Getafe president Torres – who still hopes to loan the forward for another season – revealing that Greenwood will only stay at the club if the Red Devils are unable to find a permanent buyer.

‘If it depended on the boy, his parents and the club [Getafe], I think he would continue another year here,’ he told RadioMARCA on Tuesday.

‘But Manchester United’s idea is to sell if there is a good offer, so we will have to wait. But I hope he is going to stay.’

Torres also revealed that he has not had any contact from Atletico over Greenwood, with Barcelona the only club to reach out to get information on the forward and his character.

He continued: ‘Atletico has not asked me about Greenwood, I spoke with [Atletico CEO] Miguel Angel [Gil Marin] about other things.

‘The only one who has asked me has been [Barca president] Joan Laporta when he was here.

‘I spoke with him and with [sporting director] Deco and they asked me what he was like to get a sense of the player. But first they have to sell, that is the problem of Spanish football.’

United are believed to have triggered a one-year extension clause in Greenwood’s contract which keeps him at the club until 2026 in order to strengthen their bargaining position and get a sizeable price for the forward.

Speaking earlier this year, Ratcliffe said of Greenwood: ‘There is no decision that’s been made. He’s on loan obviously, but he’s not the only one. We’ve got one or two footballers that we have to deal with and we have to make a decision on, so we will do that.

‘The process will be: understand the facts not the hype, and then try and come to fair decision on the basis of values, which is basically is he a good guy or not? Could he play sincerely for Manchester United, would we be comfortable with it and would the fans be comfortable with it?’
