Zack Snyder’s latest opus, Rebel Moon – Part Two: The Scargiver, only came out on Friday, but it’s already lost the top spot in the Netflix streaming charts to a romantic comedy that hit theaters months ago. The Scargiver is the second movie set in Snyder’s Rebel Moon universe, which mashes together elements from more successful franchises like Dune, Warhammer, and Heavy Metal magazine. It began as a Star Wars pitch before being retooled into something that’s technically original, but is totally derivative of better sci-fi stories.
Back in December, the first installment, Rebel Moon – Part One: A Child of Fire, was released to very little fanfare. It seemed as though this SnyderVerse was dead before it even started, but Part Two had already been filmed back-to-back with Part One, so there was time to turn it around. Unfortunately, Part Two has been met with an even worse reception than Part One. Just a few days after it dropped, it’s already been replaced as Netflix’s #1 movie.

Glen Powell and Sydney Sweeney’s hit Shakespearean 2023 romcom Anyone But You came to Netflix yesterday and it’s already bumped the new Rebel Moon movie from the top spot on the streaming charts. Loosely adapted from Much Ado About Nothing, Anyone But You revolves around two people who hate each other, but pretend to be a couple for their friends’ benefit at a destination wedding. Naturally, as the ruse goes on, they start to catch real romantic feelings for each other and ultimately fall in love.
Anyone But You is a shamelessly formulaic romantic comedy that acts as a throwback to the kind of big, flashy, star-studded romcoms that don’t really get made anymore. Rebel Moon is similarly intended as a throwback to the rough and gritty sci-fi of the 20th century, but Snyder’s homage to a bygone filmmaking style is much less successful than Powell and Sweeney’s. Both Anyone But You and Rebel Moon promise their audience a tried-and-true genre formula, but the former is the only one that actually delivers the goods.
What Rebel Moon’s Reception Means For The Future Of Zack Snyder’s Franchise
Rebel Moon – Part Two: The Scargiver was intended to conclude the first chapter of the Rebel Moon saga, with Snyder and co. planning a trilogy of two-part Rebel Moon movies (so six movies total), but that’s looking less and less likely now. The viewership figures for Part Two have been even weaker than that of Part One. Plus, the reviews are even worse – and the reviews for Part One weren’t that great to begin with. There are still R-rated director’s cuts on the way, but the future looks bleak for this intergalactic SnyderVerse.
