Prince William spoke at the Diana Legacy Award event held in London

Prince William has paid tribute to Princess Diana’s ‘courage, compassion and commitment’ at a memorial event held for her tonight.

He spoke at the Diana Legacy Award which celebrates young leaders and role models across the world.

William said: ‘The paths taken by these young people have not always been easy. Many have overcome adversity and prejudice, but they are driven by courage, compassion and commitment – qualities shared by my mother.’

In an address to the 20 winners, he also acknowledged the importance of the 25th anniversary since the awards were held, and how his mum taught him that ‘everyone has the potential to give something back’.

William said him and Kate continue to focus on Diana’s legacy through their work.

He continued: ‘I know that she would have been honoured to see a charity in her name doing such inspirational work to uplift young people from all corners of the globe.

‘She taught me that everyone has the potential to give something back, that everyone in need deserves a supporting hand in life.

‘That legacy is something that both Catherine and I have sought to focus on through our work, as have the 50,000 young people who have received a Diana Award over the past 25 years.

‘I am incredibly proud to see this manifested in the amazing young people receiving the Legacy Award tonight.’

Prince Harry will also participate in the award ceremony, by speaking to the winners in a video call after his brother has left the building.

It comes as the royal brothers have continued to distance themselves from each other in recent months.

They did not meet when Harry spent time with the King at Clarence House following news of his cancer diagnosis last month.
