Star Wars Animation & Storytelling At Its Best

After three years, Star Wars: The Bad Batch has come to an end in a breathtaking finale, culminating its Star Wars story in a satisfying and beautiful way. The Bad Batch has run for three seasons, first starting as a spin-off series of the beloved Star Wars: The Clone Wars animated TV show and very quickly becoming its own special pocket of the Star Wars universe. Following Clone Force 99 through the earliest days of the Galactic Empire, The Bad Batch tells the story of soldiers who find a new purpose in both family and a peaceful life.

All three seasons of The Bad Batch have now culminated in the series finale event, which has greatly exceeded already quite high expectations. From a nail-biting string of action scenes to a tear-jerking epilogue, The Bad Batch series finale may very well be one of Star Wars’ most brilliant and emotional endings yet. While it doesn’t speak to every single point brought up over the course of the season or even the series, it doesn’t have to, as The Bad Batch season 3’s ending instead focuses on the characters, relationships, and themes at the heart of the show.

The Bad Batch Wraps Up Every Story It Needed To Tell

Not every question had to be answered in the show

The Bad Batch series finale was satisfying in the way it wrapped up its storylines, even if there are still some unanswered questions that linger. While The Bad Batch certainly tied itself into vital galactic lore, many of these things — such as Palpatine’s Project Necromancer — were not the basis of the animated TV show’s story. Rather, they played a part in rooting Clone Force 99’s story to the Star Wars galaxy, informing and reminding viewers of what was happening around the clone squadron at this point in the Star Wars timeline.

For some, leaving these questions unanswered may feel unsatisfying, but it’s honestly fitting for The Bad Batch — and it’s the right call. This finale was already the perfect length, and it would’ve needed to be much longer to wrap up every single loose thread left by the narrative. Instead, its unanswered questions open up doors for future series and stories, such as the context around Asajj Ventress’ return and the reason why Captain Rex, Commander Wolffe, and Gregor end up on Seelos in Star Wars Rebels. These are not questions The Bad Batch itself should have to answer.

Clone Force 99 Gets The Ending They Have Always Deserved

This happy ending isn’t just given, it’s clearly been earned

Despite some dark teases made by the crew leading up to The Bad Batch finale, Clone Force 99 has finally gotten the happy ending they’ve always deserved. The story has never been kind to the Batch; Tech’s death in The Bad Batch season 2 ending proves that, which is still a moment and a loss many viewers have yet to fully cope with. While there are certainly many lighthearted and hopeful moments throughout The Bad Batch, there are also plenty of dark and dangerous ones, and this happy ending makes up for them all.

What’s most satisfying about this ending is that it’s not freely given. The Batch has to earn it by facing rough trials, from Crosshair losing a hand to three of them being detained and tortured by Hemlock. There is nothing easy about this victory, and that makes the resolution all the sweeter. Even then, there’s still a sting of bitterness at the reality of Tech not being there to enjoy a life of peacefulness with them. This proves that The Bad Batch has long since deserved a happy ending, and at long last, they have finally earned one.

Star Wars: The Bad Batch has quite an interesting cast of actors that features multiple Star Wars veterans, as well as a few newcomers.

The Bad Batch Epilogue Still Leaves Room For Future Storytelling

This goodbye feels more like a “see you later”

While The Bad Batch epilogue is certainly a goodbye, it still doesn’t feel like the end for all these characters. Omega’s story ends with her starting a new adventure with the Rebel Alliance, and given her friendship with Hera Syndulla in The Bad Batch season 1, it’s very likely that the two could reunite in either a Galactic Civil War era project or even in The Mandalorian era — especially with Ahsoka season 2 on the horizon. With Hunter representing the rest of Clone Force 99, the same also goes for him and the rest of the squad.

In an interview with StarWars.com, executive producers Jennifer Corbett and Brad Rau even admitted that they have some theories on what’s next for these characters, but of course chose to keep those theories a secret for now. This makes it seem very likely that Clone Force 99 could and would return again somehow, whether it be in another animated project or perhaps even in live-action. It is that hopefulness in this sweet ending that makes The Bad Batch series finale so incredibly excellent, and certainly one of Star Wars’ very best endings to date.
