Babu made his film debut in 1973 with the Telugu film Rama Rajyam. Pattina Pravesam (1977), directed by K. Balachander, was his first Tamil film. He rose to prominence after appearing in the Tamil film Nizhal Nijamagiradhu (1978), also led by Balachander.
