It’s rumoured that there will be at least some PS5 exclusives released this year from Sony, but it’s still unclear if that includes Concord.

The idea that Sony will have a preview showcase sometime this May is one rumour that’s not hard to believe, considering that’s also what happened last year, but the bigger question is what Sony will show at the event.

They’ll no doubt have lots of third party games but PlayStation’s interim boss (now that Jim Ryan has left) has already made it clear that no ‘major franchise titles’ will be out before next April. But what about minor franchise titles?

What Sony considers minor and major is open to interpretation, but they started the year with a preview reel of games due out in 2024 that included live service title Concord.

It didn’t feature any new footage though and Sony has never said anything about it, other than it’s a ‘PVP multiplayer first person shooter’. But, considering it is such an unknown quantity, it presumably doesn’t count as a major franchise title – at least not yet.

The only game that has been rumoured for the showcase, and will supposedly be released this year, is a new Astro Bot. There’s been talk of a new game ever since Team Asobi were the only developers spared the closure of Japan Studio, but never any announcement from Sony.

There have been hints about a new game going back to 2021 but it’s still unclear whether it’s a normal standalone title or a VR game like the excellent Rescue Mission.

Back in February, regular rumourmonger Jeff Grubb suggested that not only was a new Astro Bot in development but that in terms of 2024 releases, ‘There might be new game entries in franchises that already exist, they just might not be major in PlayStation’s eyes when they’re talking to investors.’

This week, he’s repeated that assertion, saying: ‘I do keep hearing that there will be some smaller first party games, like that Astro Bot game that is supposedly still happening this year.’

He gave no indication of what the other games may be but there is still hope that Sony will release at least some new first party games this year, beyond just publishing third party titles such as the upcoming Stellar Blade.
