In a twist, Muslims around the world are gearing up to fast for one more day to complete the spiritual journey of Ramadan, as the moon sighting authorities in Saudi Arabia have determined that Eid-ul-Fitr will be celebrated on Wednesday, April 10, 2024.
The official X handle of HaramainInfo, as quoted by Aljazeera, relayed the announcement, confirming that the crescent moon was not sighted, thereby extending Ramadan by an additional day. The tweet urged believers to utilize the remaining moments of the blessed month for acts pleasing to Allah and expressed prayers for acceptance of fasting, prayers, and good deeds, as well as the hope for future blessed Ramadans.

This decision was further reinforced by Saudi-based X handle, Inside The Haramain, dedicated to news about the sanctuaries of Mecca and Medina, confirming the non-sighting of the crescent on Monday.

GWG.ng reports that the shift in Eid-ul-Fitr celebration has implications for public holidays, as the Federal Government had previously announced Tuesday and Wednesday as public holidays in anticipation of Ramadan ending on Monday. With the extension of fasting, there is speculation that an additional day may be added to the public holiday to accommodate the end-of-Ramadan celebrations for Muslims.
