A new set image from Guillermo del Toro’s Frankenstein seems to tease one key scene from the book. Telling the story of an ambitious young scientist who creates a reanimated a piecemeal new being, Mary Shelley’s famous novel Frankenstein was originally published in 1818. Since then, the novel has become a staple of high school English classrooms and film and TV adaptations of Frankenstein, with numerous different takes being offered on the notorious monster tale.

Now, a new post from Guillermo del Toro seems to reveal a scene from his Frankenstein movie. Taking to Twitter, the director posted an image of him next to two other men, smiling at the camera. Behind them is a bustling set that appears to have a ship mast and part of a boat behind them.

del Toro captioned the post with “Two of my favorite Danes,” in reference to the men at either side of him. He also said “Shooting F,” which seems to be a clear shorthand for his upcoming film Frankenstein.

What to Expect from Guillermo del Toro’s Frankenstein Adaptation

A ship like the one in the background of this set photo plays a critical role in the book version of Frankenstein. In Shelley’s work, Victor Frankenstein travels on a boat manned by polar explorer Robert Walton. Victor is found and picked up by this boat after Walton and his crew become trapped in a sheet of ice. While on the boat, Victor recounts his story to Walton, so the novel then shifts between this seafaring location and the story of Victor and the Monster, which takes place mostly in Germany.

The boat in the background suggests that del Toro’s Frankenstein will prominently feature the boat in its storytelling. Within this storytelling, the director includes a superstar cast including Oscar Isaac and Jacob Elordi as Frankenstein and his monster, respectively. Rounding out the Frankenstein cast includes Mia Goth, Christoph Waltz, David Bradley, Ralph Ineson, Lars Mikkelsen, Christian Convery, and Felix Kammerer. In addition to directing the film, del Toro helms the screenplay and acts as one of its producers.

Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio
is available to watch on Netflix.

The most recent Frankenstein set image seemingly reveals the film’s commitment to the novel’s original structure. This is no surprise coming from del Toro, whose adaptations — such as Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio — often seek to capture the spirit of the original works in a way many adaptations do not. A classic story like Frankenstein is daunting for any director, but del Toro’s deep experience in the monster movie genre well-equips him for the task. Coupled with a strong cast, Frankenstein will likely stun when it hits theaters in 2025.
