People in a small town have been left confused by a mysterious high-pitched noise.

The noise is so loud that the local council has started an investigation after it was heard in Spondon and Borrowash, Derbyshire.

No one knows yet where the noise is specifically coming from but some councillors believe it could be from a nearby business estate.

The councillors say it has been reported to Derby City Council’s environmental protection team which are looking into the situation.

A post on Spondon Councillors Facebook page reads: ‘We are investigating a noise issue that a few residents have been in touch with. We have put this forward to our environmental protection team to take a look at.

‘However, we have to date not been able to identify where it is coming from. It is a high-pitched noise that can be heard in the early morning and yesterday it was heard from the majority of the day.

‘Residents who live near the south of Spondon can hear it most and even residents in Borrowash have reported it.

‘It does sound like it could be coming from the commercial park or the Smart Parc. If anyone has any information that could help us, that would be fantastic.’

Many locals have posted either their confusion about the noise or possible theories as to what it might be.

Ruth Tinkler posted on Spondon Community Group: ‘Does anyone actually know what the high-pitched buzzing noise is? I hear it most mornings. So annoying.’

Tansy Collins said her niece heard the noise and commented: ‘We were walking up and down Merchant Avenue yesterday at about 5pm. My niece was saying she could hear a beeping sound continuously. We couldn’t hear it so thought it must be something pretty high-pitched.’

Daniel Lifty offered his explanation and wrote: ‘Refrigeration from the new energy centre building.’

Andy Beecham also wrote: ‘We hear it intermittently and we’re just off Locko Road. I thought it may be from the wind turbines?’

Derby City Council has been contacted for comment.

This is not the first time residents have complained about a strange noise after people living near a new block of luxury flats said they could hear a ‘tinnitus-inducing banshee-like screaming sound’.

Video footage revealed a whirring noise coming from the Shoreline Crescent Development in Folkestone, Kent, which contains 84 new homes.

Locals said the ‘loud’ noise, appears to be being caused by wind blowing through the building’s balcony railings and sounds like a ‘harp crossed with a xylophone’.
