His hometown of Lwali is in the Uttarakhand district of Almora, in the taluka of Jaiti. The community has between twenty and thirty homes. In 1970, his father, Pan Singh Dhoni, left the area in search for a job. He eventually chose to make Ranchi his permanent residence. Dhoni’s cousin Hayat Singh Dhauni and uncle Dhanpat Singh Dhauni continue to live in Lwali.
