A native PS5 version of Minecraft appears to be on the horizon after files were discovered in the PlayStation Store.

Minecraft might be accessible on every platform imaginable, but there isn’t a native current-gen version yet.

The only way to play Minecraft on PlayStation is through the PS4 version, which can be played on PS5 via backwards compatibility. The Xbox version was updated last year to support 4K, but there still isn’t an optimised current-gen version for either platform.

It seems like a native PS5 version is imminent however, after files were discovered for the title in the backend of Sony’s PlayStation store.

The discovery was confirmed by social media account PlayStation Game Size, which has a strong track record for outing games early through hidden files in the store.

As such, it’s very likely an Xbox Series X/S version is also in the works – although Microsoft has yet to acknowledge the existence of either at the time of writing.

The fact files exist in the store though suggests it should be coming out soon, but it’s unclear whether it will be randomly released or tied to an upcoming Sony or Microsoft presentation.

Minecraft on PS5 was previously mentioned during Microsoft’s Federal Trade Commission trial last year, where Microsoft Gaming CEO Phil Spencer blamed Sony for the lack of PS5 version.

‘Sony was reluctant to send us development kits for the PlayStation 5 at the same time they were sending them to other developers, which put us at a disadvantage relative to other developers,’ Spencer said (via IGN). ‘I think Sony could have sent the development kits to Microsoft just as easy as they sent them to any other publisher.’

Minecraft spin-off Minecraft Legends was recently announced as one of the free PlayStation Plus games for April, alongside Immortals Of Aveum and Skul: The Hero Slayer. These games will be available for PS Plus subscribers from April 2 until May 6.

Since it launched in 2009, Minecraft has sold over 300 million copies. In comparison, GTA 5 has sold 190 million copies as of 2024.
