Jamie Carragher believes Manchester United’s stuttering FA Cup victory over Coventry City will cost Erik ten Hag his job at Old Trafford.

Championship side Coventry came from 3-0 down to level the match at 3-3 and take a dramatic semi-final at Wembley to penalties.

United were in complete control when Bruno Fernandes added his side’s third on the hour mark following first-half goals from Scott McTominay and Harry Maguire.

But Coventry scored three times in the final 20 minutes – Ellis Simms, Callum O’Hare and Haji Wright with the goals – to stun Manchester United and force a penalty shootout.

By that point United were grateful to even get to penalties as Coventry thought they had scored a sensational last-minute winner through Wright only for VAR to intervene and disallow the goal for offside.

Manchester United won the penalty shootout 4-2 to book a FA Cup final showdown against Manchester City, but Carragher believes the performance will still ultimately cost Ten Hag his job.

‘I think that result has just cost Erik ten Hag his job,’ Carragher said on Sky Sports. ‘I don’t see how he stays, I really don’t.

‘It’s just poor performance after poor performance. That dressing room is probably the most embarrassed dressing room from a team that has just won a big game.

‘You can’t even celebrate that win. Maybe that can somehow win the final but I just don’t see any progress. This is somebody’s job we’re talking about but I just don’t see how they [the owners] can look at the situation and be positive about it. I don’t see it.’

Manchester United’s late collapse should not come as a huge surprise even if it came against Championship opposition.

Ten Hag’s side have flattered to deceive all season and find themselves just seventh in the Premier League and in danger of missing out on European football with six games remaining.

Reacting to United’s dramatic semi-final win, Ten Hag said: ‘It’s mixed feelings. The way we did it isn’t OK.

‘We should have managed it better but it’s a huge performance. If you analyse the game we controlled 75 minutes but then allowed them to return into the game.

‘I have to give a compliment to the opponent. They believed but we allowed them. We should managed it better.

‘I don’t think heads dropped but we had many setbacks and maybe it’s human but it’s not acceptable.

‘We have to show resilience. By the end we did show resilience and determination to win the shootout. When you are so in control you should win easy.’
