Major disruption is expected just outside of London this morning, after the entire eastbound portion of the M26 was closed following a van crash.

The vehicle left the road early this morning, with emergency services arriving on the scene at around 1am.

As the investigation continues, the road has been closed between the M25 junction 5, for the A21 near Sevenoaks, and the M26 junction 2A, near Wrotham Heath – essentially the entire length of the short motorway.

National Highways has put in place a diversion that avoids the motorway entirely on the carriageway leading from London to Kent.

Its website states: ‘There is currently no estimate available for when the carriageway will re-open, however with investigations still ongoing and recovery and clear up required following completion it is expected this morning’s peak period will be affected.’

The advised diversion, which is not symbol led, follows this route:

  • At J5 of the M25 continue on the anti-clockwise for approximately seven miles to J3.
  • Exit the M25 anti-clockwise at J3 and at the roundabout take the fourth exit onto the M20 eastbound, towards Dover.
  • Remain on the M20 eastbound for approximately 6 miles to J2.
  • Exit at J2 and use the A20 to reach M26 J2A (near Wrotham Heath) or continue eastbound to reach M20 J3 (where the M26 meets the M20).
