A major casting in Jason Bourne 6 would mark a full-circle moment in Matt Damon’s celebrated career. Since skyrocketing to Hollywood acclaim after writing and starring in Good Will Hunting (1997), Damon has maintained his status as one of the most recognized actors in the world. This is largely in part due to Damon’s acclaimed Bourne movies, the first three of which were released in the 2000s. During that era, Damon has also starred in instant classics such as The Talented Mr. Ripley, Saving Private Ryan, Ocean’s Eleven, and Martin Scorsese’s Academy Award-winning film The Departed.

Damon reprised his iconic role in 2016’s reboot Jason Bourne, which is the last time that the actor has depicted one of the most celebrated characters of his career. Damon has had plenty of other projects since 2016 to work with, including Ford v Ferrari, Air, and of course, Best Picture winner Oppenheimer. Damon’s various cameos have also become legendary in their own right. While Damon has expressed interest in returning to the Bourne franchise, his participation in Bourne 6 has yet to be confirmed. His next movie appearance is expected to be in John Krasinski’s upcoming IF which hits theaters in May 2024.

Jason Bourne 6 Should Cast Ben Affleck To Face Off With Matt Damon After Multiple Movies Together

Damon & Affleck have been on a modern streak after iconic 90’s pairing

(1992).

It’s well-known that Matt Damon and Ben Affleck have been great friends and collaborators since their early days of acting and screenwriting, which is why a showdown in Jason Bourne 6 would be a monumental moment in both of their careers. Affleck and Damon started as background actors together in Field of Dreams before making their first onscreen appearance together in School Ties (1992). Good Will Hunting made their relationship and creative partners and friends famous, and the duo would go on to appear together in 1997’s Chasing Amy, 1999’s Dogma, and 2001’s Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back.

Damon and Affleck hadn’t appeared in a movie together for some 18 years between 2001’s Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back and 2019’s Jay and Silent Bob reboot. Since then, the iconic duo have starred in two additional films together, 2021’s The Last Duel and 2023’s Air as well as a notorious Dunkin Super Bowl ad. They are also set to collaborate on Doug Liman’s The Instigators, with Affleck producing, Damon starring, and Casey Affleck writing the screenplay. If there were ever a time for Damon to face off against Affleck in a Bourne movie, it would be during this modern stretch of co-appearances.

Ben Affleck vs. Matt Damon In Jason Bourne 6 Could Pay Off An Old Affleck Joke

Matt Damon look concerned as Jason Bourne in 2016's Jason Bourne

The idea of an ex-Batman facing a seasoned Bourne sounds pretty compelling, especially considering Damon and Affleck’s track record and friendly rivalry.

Affleck, a former Batman actor, has previously stated that he could take Damon in a fight. He told EW back in 2016, “Matt is going around saying this all over the place but not to my face. But Matt can’t even beat me up, never mind Batman. You know what I’m saying? He has a long way to go…They’re just finishing the Bourne movie now when we have our premiere over in London. I’ll see Matt and he can take me up on it.” While Affleck was certainly joking around, the idea of an ex-Batman facing a seasoned Bourne sounds pretty compelling, especially considering Damon and Affleck’s track record and friendly rivalry.

Having Affleck and Damon square off in Bourne 6 would be an iconic movie-going event that would likely impact culture outside the film alone, much like 2023’s Barbenheimer phenomenon. The promotion leading up to the film’s release would essentially be like a UFC title fight and would create a hilarious “real-life” rivalry between the two Oscar winners and friends. Even in Affleck’s “bad guy” leading roles in films such as The Town, the audience is typically still rooting for him, which would make his villain character in Jason Bourne 6 a truly must-see movie experience.

Matt Damon has expressed interest as recently as February 2024 in returning to the Bourne franchise after reading and approving a screenplay. Other than that, there have been no major updates on the status of Jason Bourne 6 other than Universal’s 2023 announcement that the franchise film was officially in development. Jason Bourne 6 will either see the return of Damon’s iconic character or focus on another protagonist, which could include Jeremy Renner’s Aaron Cross from The Bourne Legacy. Ideally, Damon will reaffirm his status as the face of the franchise in Jason Bourne 6 and Affleck’s involvement in any capacity would surely enhance it.
