With food prices continuing to rise, people across the UK will be looking for affordable ways to feed themselves and their family, and it seems Iceland could be a ‘lifesaver’ for some.

The supermarket chain already offers hundreds of products for just £1 in partnership with The Food Warehouse, but they’ve just added 50 new items to the range, which includes ready meals, and frozen pizza.

This takes the total number of products costing £1 or less in-store and online to 750, and shoppers are praising the retailer for helping those who are struggling to put food on the table.

In a post on Facebook, Sandra Rowley said: ‘This range along with the 10 for a tenner will be a lifesaver for many people. Prices have rocketed but wages have not.’

Carol Quelch proclaimed it a ‘fab range’ as Alice Mercer wrote: ‘That is quite the range and also handy if you live alone on a budget too. Good addition to the freezer for a quick, inexpensive, easy meal.’

Leslie Greenhalgh added: ‘These are brilliant for struggling families etc. Maybe not full of nutrition, but add extra veg, plus for a lot of folks, [it’ll] save on the gas and electricity of having to cook everyday.’

The current top 10 best selling items from the £1 range are lasagne, thin pepperoni pizza, thin cheese pizza, chicken curry and rice, spaghetti bolognese, thin and crispy cheese and ham pizza, mini hash brown bites, mac and cheese, potato pops, and toad in the hole.

The lasagne takes the top spot for the most popular item, with over 185 reviews on Iceland’s website, with customers praising the ‘good value’, ‘delicious taste’, and ‘generous portion size’.

Richard Walker, executive chairman of Iceland Foods, is ‘delighted’ that the company is able to help customers during this difficult financial time by offering affordable prices.

He told Metro.co.uk: ‘There is a narrative that the cost-of-living crisis is getting better, I can assure you, it’s not.

‘There is a reason why our £1 range of products is flying off the shelves, shoppers are in desperate need of quality meals at affordable prices and that’s exactly what our range offers.

‘After seeing the popularity of the range and the crisis showing no signs of slowing down, we are delighted to be able to expand the range bringing more affordable products.’

We’ve tried some of the £1 meals, here’s our verdict:

Metro’s specialist food writer Courtney Pochin tried several of Iceland’s £1 meals and thought these were the best of the bunch:

Cheesy beans and sausages

Beans and cheese are a classic pairing, but throw some potatoes and mini sausages into the mix and you’ve got yourself a hearty meal that works well as a breakfast, lunch, or dinner.

Verdict: 5/5

Vegetable Lasagne

The lasagne might be the most popular £1 meal, but controversially I preferred the vegetarian version to the meaty one. This dish contains a mixture of peppers, tomato, and spinach and has a strong tomato and basil flavour. It’s a good size and has a nice taste, but would benefit from a few more veggies on the side.

Verdict: 4/5

Macaroni Cheese

A very simple meal but one that does exactly what it says on the box: it’s pasta with cheese sauce. Kids will likely love it as it is, but for adults it’s very much a blank canvas, so you could easily jazz it up by adding some meat for protein, and any vegetables, or salad of your choosing. Bacon pieces and tomatoes would go well with this, and breadcrumbs on top would add nice crunch.

Verdict: 4/5

It’s not just food that’s affordable at Iceland, as the supermarket also recently launched its own HOME range, featuring a selection of household essentials like washing-up liquid, antibacterial surface wipes, and fabric conditioner, priced at just £1 or less.

And of course, we’ve heard how Iceland has thrown support behind Metro’s Formula For Change campaign, helping to bring down costs of formula milk for customers as well.

‘We’ve heard terrible stories of customers watering down feeds, skipping feeds or ignoring sell by dates, all of which is really bad for the baby. That prompted us to take action,’ Richard explained.

Iceland slashed prices earlier this year, revealing three of its Aptamil formula milk products would sell at £11.20 – a move which led other retailers such as Asda and Tesco to follow suit and reduce their own prices.

The supermarket also took further steps with the launch of two formula milks – Little Steps First Infant Powder and Little Steps Follow on Powder for just £7.95.

‘The price is a mind-blowing £7.95 which makes it the cheapest infant formula milk on the market. I think it will really really help our customers,’ Richard says, adding that it’s not just a clever business move.

‘We’re not making any profit out of this now. We’re passing on the savings which we’re managing to persuade the manufacturer to give straight on to our customers.’

FORMULA FOR CHANGE: HOW YOU CAN HELP

Join Metro.co.uk and Feed in calling on the government to urgently review their infant formula legislation and give retailers the green light to accept loyalty points, all food bank vouchers and store gift cards as payment for infant formula.

Our aim is to take our petition to No.10 to show the Prime Minister this is an issue that can no longer be ignored.
