Gladiators fans were left reeling after a dramatic semi-final episode of the BBC reboot.

The game show, which originally ran from 1992 to 2000, has been a major hit in its new iteration, gripping viewers who tune in to see contenders take on elite athletes in a series of physical challenges.

Fans have particularly connected with contestant Chung Leung, 33, who was rushed from the arena by paramedics in the series penultimate episode, to the shock and horror of viewers.

The competitor, who works as a software engineer, held his own against the Gladiators throughout much of the explosive episode, giving little ground throughout the Duel, the Wall, and the Edge.

But as the London native took on the Powerball game, the crowd’s cheers quickly turned to gasps of horror as Gladiator Apollo tackled Chung.

He hit the ground hard, grimacing in agony as it quickly became clear this was more than a minor knock for the competitor.

The game was put on hold as Chung writhed in pain, gripping his leg as paramedics quickly rushed him out of the arena.

The dramatic moment culminated in Chung having to withdraw from the show amidst outpourings of shock from fans online.

X user @dorianevans1 wrote ‘Kids went to bed crying after that. Gutted for Chung and that Eliminator was incredible.’

Another, @niall5982, wrote, ‘Nooooo poor Chung, the drama in this episode though.’

@rickyboleto posted: ‘I have never shouted so much at the TV. That was a brilliant semifinal.’

The host of the show, Bradley Walsh, informed devastated fans that Chung was too injured to continue, saying, ‘Earlier we had to suspend the men’s Powerball game when Chung sadly was injured.

‘After consultations with the medical team, the decision has been made that he can no longer continue in the competition. He’s doing okay and is recieving the best medical care. And we’ll get you an update on his condition before the end of the show.”

Chung’s exit necessitated a substitute tap-in to take his place, giving civil engineer Matt from Cardiff a second crack at the competition.

He emerged on crutches to huge cheers from the crowd at the end of the episode, which was ultimately won by competitor Wesley Male.

Finlay Anderson, Wesley Male, Bronte Jones, and Marie-Louise Nicholson will compete in the grand finale to determine who will be crowned the ultimate gladiator.

Gladiators will air next Saturday at 5.50pm on BBC One.
