Armed men have reportedly killed 10 residents of Olegumachi community in Agatu Local Government Area of Benue State.
The chairman of the local government, Phillip Ebenyakwu confirmed the report to Punch, stating the destruction of seven houses by the assailants.
Ebenyakwu noted that the armed men invaded the community on Tuesday evening, barely four days after three persons among them an aged couple were killed in Ikpele, another community in Agatu.
The chairman revealed that the fresh attack witnessed the attackers cart away relevant properties and animals from their victims.
He further noted that the local government authorities had reported to the police and the Department of State Security.
Agatu LGA is one of Benue’s hotspot areas with ceaseless records of attacks by armed men.
The situation in Agatu is reportedly hydra-headed, with cases of communal, herder-farmer crisis and alleged religious extremism taking the centre stage of challenges that security agencies have to tackle.
Despite a myriad of interventions by the Federal Government, Non-Government Organisations and concerned stakeholders, the pattern of insecurity in the state is ostensibly constant, with more cases of attacks recorded during the dry season.
