A fraudster who tried to swindle £500,000 from an insurance company for faking a disability was busted after going on The Jeremy Kyle Show.

Patricia Rogers, 25, made a civil claim for nearly £500,000 in damages after being involved in a road traffic collision in 2014, which she claimed had left her unable to walk without a stick or crutches, City of London Police said.

But footage later gathered as evidence, including from appearances on the now-axed ITV chat show, showed Rogers was able to walk unaided for an extensive period of time.

Rogers, of Hoyland Road, Barnsley, walked, stood and ran across the stage unaided when she was a guest on The Jeremy Kyle Show in 2017 and 2018, police said.

Rogers had made the claim worth £492,141 from insurance company NFU Mutual after she was involved in a crash with one of the firm’s policyholders.

She claimed that the accident had caused a back condition that severely disrupted her everyday life.

NFU Mutual gathered surveillance footage of Rogers on April 26 2021 after it noted inconsistencies in medical reports she used to support her claim.

Rogers attended a medical assessment the same day, and footage showed that she travelled to the appointment in a taxi and walked with a walking stick.

However, more footage from earlier that day showed Rogers leaving her residence and walking her two dogs unaided for around 40 minutes, including holding one of their leads, with no obvious discomfort.

The case was referred to the City of London Police’s Insurance Fraud Enforcement Department (IFED) by NFU Mutual in August 2021.

During an interview on November 17 2021, Rogers was shown the footage and told officers that she could not use a walking stick because she was holding the lead.

She added she had been able to walk around on The Jeremy Kyle Show unaided because she felt angry, which distracted her from the pain.

Rogers pleaded guilty to fraud by false representation at Sheffield Crown Court on February 2, City of London Police said.

Overseeing the trial, Judge Jeremy Richardson KC called Roger’s decision to go onto The Jeremy Kyle Show as ‘bizarre’, according to The Star.

Richardson said: ‘As a result of your baleful family circumstances, you made what may only be described as an extraordinarily stupid decision to go on a television programme and discuss – in public – all of your family difficulties.

‘That television programme was viewed by a lot of people, it would appear, albeit I gather it was on daytime television.

‘It was inevitable that a disability – or rather lack of a disability – would be exposed.’

Rogers was sentenced to 12 months imprisonment, suspended for 18 months, and ordered to pay £500 in compensation at the same court on Tuesday.

Summing up the verdict, Richardson said: ‘It seems to me that in all of the circumstances of this case that a suspended sentence is the right course of action.’

He added: ‘This was a serious and protracted attempt to deceive an insurance company.’
