Ally McCoist has warned Manchester United against hiring former Chelsea boss Graham Potter as Erik ten Hag’s replacement.

Ten Hag enjoyed a promising first year at Old Trafford – securing a top-four finish and winning the League Cup – but performances have fallen away this term, with United now sixth in the Premier League.

With just seven games remaining, a top-four finish looks out of reach and while fifth may yet to be enough to secure Champions League qualification, it remains to be seen whether the United board are satisfied enough to stick with Ten Hag.

Reports claim they could be persuaded to give the Dutchman more time, especially if the Red Devils impress during the run-in and win another trophy ahead of a FA Cup semi-final against Coventry City.

But United have picked up just two points since the international break and were the inferior team in their recent draws with Liverpool and Brentford.

It is not only the team’s performances that should worry Ten Hag but also speculation the Premier League giants have begun looking for his potential replacement.

England boss Gareth Southgate, who will likely leave the Three Lions after this summer’s Euros, has been linked with the Manchester United job, while Potter reportedly has admirers within Old Trafford.

Potter’s last job was a miserable seven-month spell at Chelsea after moving from Brighton, where he spent three successful years.

Asked if he can see Potter at Manchester United, McCoist said on talkSPORT: ‘No, I don’t think he’d be a good fit for that job.

‘I think he’ll need to go somewhere else first after the disappointment at Chelsea.

‘I don’t think he’ll come into the running for United because I don’t think it’s a good look for them taking a manager who’s been sacked at Chelsea.’

McCoist’s talkSPORT colleague Alan Brazil believes time is running out for Ten Hag, who he says reminds him of a ‘science teacher’.

Before moving to United, Ten Hag impressed with Ajax, taking the Dutch side to three Eredivisie titles and into the latter stages of the Champions League, but he is losing supporters in Manchester.

Asked if he expects Ten Hag to lose his job, ex-Scotland international Brazil said: ‘Yeah, I do.

‘You’ve got to have something about you as a United manager and I just don’t see it. He reminds me of a science teacher. I like characters, I just don’t see any character in him, I’m sorry.’

Manchester United continue their Premier League campaign on Saturday against Bournemouth. Their must-win FA Cup semi-final clash with Championship side Coventry City takes place on April 21.
