A Noble Exchange is a side quest that triggers as soon as you enter the Masquerade as a guest for the first time. You’ll be presented with the choice to either steal, hide, or hand over a stolen item. Here is what you need to do to avoid getting blamed for the theft.

How To Start ‘A Noble Exchange’

Visit the Vernworth Hall that’s located just outside the Palace (shown above) wearing Formal Raiment at night. Formal Raiment consists of Courtly Breeches and Courtly Tunic, available by completing ‘The Ornate Box’ quest as well as placed in chests all over the Palace.

With the proper attire, approach the guard standing outside the Masquerade Hall and he’ll inform you if there is a Masquerade that night or not. Masquerades happen every two nights so wait a day and try again and you should be able to get in.

If this is your first time attending the ball, you’ll be approached by a masked figure as soon as you step inside who’ll offer you a gift in the form of a Paragon Staff, an extremely valuable item and introduce you to the custom of gift giving in the Masquerade. Attendees are expected to exchange gifts with one another. After giving you the staff, he’ll leave, and you’ll be left alone to attend the party.

Use this opportunity to approach the other guests, and they’ll offer you more gifts one by one. You can gift them items too, but there is no need to. The game doesn’t expect you to hand over anything.

After you’ve made your rounds, the guards will suddenly call out that there has been a theft in the area. An extremely precious staff has been stolen from the Palace, and the thief is likely still in the Hall. This is, of course, the Paragon Staff currently sitting pretty in your inventory. You’ll need to figure out how to dispose of it without getting burned.

There are three ways to avoid getting blamed for theft and being thrown into jail.

A Noble Exchange is a timed quest. From the moment you receive the Paragon Staff and the guard calls out that a staff has been stolen, you have very little time before the guards lose their patience and start searching.

Option 1: Grab the Culprit

Walk up to the person who gave you the staff and use the grab button to push them down to the ground (pictured above). This will force a cutscene where the culprit will be forced to confess his crimes of stealing the staff and the guards will remove the staff automatically.

  • Result: The Culprit will be apprehended, and you will be free. You will not be able to keep the staff.

Option 2: Discard The Staff And Talk To The Guards

There are two rooms in the back of the Masquerade Hall. Use the one shown in the screenshot above and discard the staff on the ground. Then, return to the Hall and talk to the guard in the middle of the room to prove your innocence.

Option 3: Discard The Staff And Grab The Culprit

Discard the Paragon staff in the same location as the one shown above and apprehend the culprit. This will both allow you to get the right guy blamed for the theft and allow you to buy the item later from the Scrap store if you so choose.

  • Result: The Culprit will be apprehended and you will go free. You’ll be able to buy the staff later from Ibrahim’s Scrap Store in Checkpoint Rest Town for 60,000 Gold.
