CCTV reports that two Chinese residents were detained after they were accused of using an excavator to destroy a portion of the Great Wall in the province of Shanxi, which is situated in the most northern section of the country. CCTV said that the damage was caused in the province of Shanxi.

CCTV shows that on August 24th, officials in Youyu County were alerted that a breach in the wall had been created in Yangqianhe Township. CCTV also shows that the hole in the wall was discovered.

According to the broadcaster, a man aged 38 and a woman aged 55 were taken into custody after it was found that they had used an excavator to break through a wall and create a shortcut through it. This put at risk the “irreversible” safety and integrity of that stretch of the wall.

The investigation, as far as the authorities can tell, is still ongoing.

The 32nd Great Wall is a portion of the Ming Great Wall (1368–1644) that has been maintained in its entirety, together with the watchtowers that were next to it at the time of its construction.
