SCROLL TO CONTINUE WITH CONTENT

Originally launched in 2019, Apple TV+ positioned itself as a unique offering among the wealth of streaming services because it doesn’t rely on content from other studios. While Netflix, Hulu, Max, and Prime Video have a plethora of licensed content that fans know from theaters and various studios, Apple TV+ mostly specializes in original content made specifically for its streaming service, with award-winning original movies and shows like Ted Lasso and Severance. As such, Apple TV+ tends to see less turnover thanks to its original content, these properties remaining a constant for subscribers of the service.

Apple TV+ has added several popular movies for a limited time, but unlike services like Netflix, these are very short-time licenses and usually leave the service after just a month or two on the streamer. Films like Saving Private Ryan, Fight Club, and I Am Legend lasted for only two months on Apple TV+, leaving at the end of April. Several other licensed movies leave the service at the end of May 2024, with Apple TV+ not adding any more non-originals after this seemingly one-time offer of 50 new releases in March.

The Godfather

Apple TV+ loses both The Godfather and The Godfather: Part II on May 31. The groundbreaking movies brought the gangster genre back to the mainstream thanks to director Francis Ford Coppola and his amazing cast. In the first movie, Marlon Brando stars as Don Corleone, a high-level mafia boss who has one son who is a military hero (Michael played by Al Pacino) and a second with eyes on the empire (James Caan as Sonny). However, when a hit is placed on the Don, his family has to figure out who did it and strike back.

The second movie shows the younger days of Don Corleone (Robert De Niro) and the present-day rise of Michael as the new Don of his family. Both movies were major success stories, with Brando and De Niro winning Oscars for each of the films, and both movies winning Best Picture at the Oscars, with the second movie as the first sequel to ever win that award. There was also a third movie that received lesser critical praise, but one that concluded the story.

The Godfather’s Ending Explained (What Happens and What It All Means)

The Godfather contains one of the most classic, dramatic finales in cinematic history. But how does the ending play out, and what does it mean?

Bridge Of Spies

Steven Spielberg has made several war movies and TV shows over his career, including the Apple TV+ series Masters of the Air. While his masterpiece remains Saving Private Ryan, which was on Apple TV+ until the end of April 2024, he had another Cold War movie that came out in 2015 called Bride of Spies, which leaves on May 31. Tom Hanks stars in both of those Spielberg war epics, and here he plays a lawyer who is sent to negotiate the release of a CIA pilot held in a Soviet Union prison in exchange for a KGB spy held in the United States.

While this is leaving the streaming service, fans can still watch
Masters of the Air
, which was Spielberg’s follow-up to
The Pacific
, which Hanks also produced.

Bridge of Spies was a critical success, picking up six Academy Award nominations, including Best Picture and Best Original Screenplay. Based on a true story, Tom Hanks didn’t receive a nomination, a rarity for him when it comes to award-nominated movies, but his co-star Mark Rylance did win Best Supporting Actor for his role as KGB spy Rudolf Abel. While this is leaving the streaming service, fans can still watch Masters of the Air, which was Spielberg’s follow-up to The Pacific, which Hanks also produced.

Transformers

In 2007, Michael Bay brought the classic toy line and cartoon, Transformers, to the big screen as a live-action film. It was a massive success, with the movie leading to a new franchise that has since seen seven live-action Transformers movies released, grossing a total of $5.28 billion at the box office. While all those movies are available to stream on various services, two of them are on Apple TV+ — but only for one more month. Transformers and its second sequel (the third movie), Transformers: Dark of the Moon, will leave the service on May 31.

movies leave Apple TV+ in May 2024, including
Transformers
&
Transformers: Dark of the Moon.

In these two Transformers movies, Michael Bay tells the story of Sam Witwicky, a young teenager who learns that the Autobots are robotic aliens on Earth protecting the planet from the evil Decepticons. The first movie is mostly an origin story and sees Witwicky and the Auto-Bots battle Megatron and his allies. In Dark of the Moon, the mythology is increased as Megatron learns of alien tech abandoned on Earth’s moon and the Auto-Bots have to stop him before he destroys Earth with it to recreate Cybertron.

Jerry Maguire

Cameron Crowe made his name making movies based around music, but in 1996 he directed one of his most successful movies and instead of music, it was a love story based in the world of sports. Tom Cruise stars as the titular sports agent in Jerry Maguire, a man who quit a major agency and only found one client who was willing to follow him — a hotshot NFL wide receiver named Rod Tidwell. However, Rod expects Maguire to get him a great deal on his next contract that will “show me the money.” Jerry Maguire leaves Apple TV+ on May 31.

There are several inspirational sports movies and shows on Apple TV+, including the award-winning
Ted Lasso
.

The real story in the movie, though, is the love story between Jerry Maguire and his assistant Dorothy Boyd (Renee Zellweger). For sports fans, the movie was a fun-filled love story with lots of athletes making cameos, including former NFL stars Drew Bledsoe, Harman Moore, Troy Aikman, Warren Moon, and Kerry Collins. The movie even won an Oscar, with Cuba Gooding Jr. winning for his role as Rod Tidwell. Jerry Maguire is also full of great quotes, from “Show me the money” and “You had me at hello” to “You complete me” and “Help me help you.”

The Amazing Spider-Man

Apple TV+ has The Amazing Spider-Man and The Amazing Spider-Man 2 on the streaming service until the middle of May. While these are considered by many to be inferior to the Sam Raimi original trilogy and the MCU reboot with Tom Holland, there are still many fans who consider Andrew Garfield one of the best Spider-Man actors. His appearance in the MCU Spider-Man: No Way Home is still a favorite moment for many fans and have some wanting to see his Spider-Man trilogy finally completed at Sony.

The first movie has Spider-Man falling in love with Gwen Stacy while battling the monstrous villain, The Lizard, while also clashing with Gwen’s dad, a police captain. The second movie has Spider-Man battle a new Green Goblin in Harry Osborne and also Electro, played by Jamie Foxx. Both Electro and Lizard returned in Spider-Man: No Way Home. These are two of the first movies to leave Apple TV+ in May 2024, as they both depart the service halfway through the month, on April 14.
