Andor showrunner Tony Gilroy has revealed his excitement for the upcoming Andor season 2 in an interview with the Writers Guild of America East, identifying the Star Wars TV show as the most important story he’s ever told in his work. Among Star Wars movies and TV shows, Andor is one of the most unique. Following on the heels of the Andor season 1 ending and leading up to the events of Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, this second installment in the show is sure to be a thrilling one.

Andor’s showrunner Tony Gilroy seems to heartily agree about the incredible story to come in Andor season 2. In an interview speaking to the Writers Guild of America East, posted by WGAEast on X, Gilroy explained:

“I’ve been on Andor for five years now; we’re finishing the second half. I’ve had a lot of fun over the years, but I don’t know whether I’ve ever done anything as important as these 24 hours of storytelling that we’re doing now.”

In part, the importance of Andor can be found in how distinct the show is from the rest of Star Wars.

Although many of Star Wars’ best TV shows have explored relatable and meaningful concepts that connect to real life, Andor stands out even among those other shows. Rather than yet another branch of the Skywalker family tree, Andor is a show that explores the Star Wars timeline from a completely new perspective. Specifically, Andor is not about the incredibly powerful Jedi or the evil, corrupt Sith; Andor is about everyday struggling people.

Set during the heart of the Dark Times as the Death Star is actively being built, Andor season 1 saw the granular realities of individuals during the oppression of the Empire. While, yes, many of Andor’s characters do ultimately have connections to Star Wars’ main characters—after all, Cassian Andor plays a key role in the destruction of the Death Star and therefore the fall of the Empire—that isn’t really what Andor is about.

Upcoming Star Wars Shows: Story, Casts & Everything We Know

Several exciting Star Wars TV shows are set to be released on Disney+ in the coming years from the realm of both live-action and animation.

Fascinatingly, perhaps more so than any other Star Wars show, Andor is about fighting back against a regime and how one can survive in the day-to-day under such violence, fear, and oppression. However dismal it may be, the stories Andor tells therefore do have a connection to the modern day and, of course, to human history more generally. While the real world may not offer superhuman powers and planet-destroying weapons, it does have a history that at times aligns with aspects of the Empire.

For this reason, Andor reflects a significant, unique, and—as Tony Gilroy aptly said—important story. Moreover, while it takes place in the Star Wars universe, Andor represents a connection to reality that encourages audiences to consider their own positions and perspectives. Although many story details are yet to be revealed, it’s clear that Andor season 2 will continue to build upon the incredible work the Star Wars show has already done.

Diego Luna stars as Cassian Andor in Andor, a Disney+ exclusive series set five years before Rogue One. The series follows the titular character as he transitions from a humble thief to a revolutionary icon of the rebellion against the empire. Cassian, a man who tries to keep himself out of confrontations post the destruction of his world, is shoved into the central conflict as he naturally slots into the role of leader. Andor will explore the rebellion’s burgeoning days and highlight pivotal events in the Star Wars Franchise before the construction of the Death Star.
